Your bitFlyer account
is blocked?
bitFlyer is three separately regulated operations — Japan, Europe and the United States — with three help centres and three sets of rules. Working out which one your account is on decides which answer applies to it.
We are not employees of bitFlyer. Independent consulting.

Account frozen
This account has been frozen for security reasons.
What it means
bitFlyer publishes a specific route for this: to re-enable an account after a security freeze, contact support, which will need to verify your identity before unfreezing the account.
What bitFlyer requires
Contact with support and the identity verification it asks for.
Your first step
Have the identity documents your regional entity accepts ready before you write. Verification is the step the unfreeze waits on.

Why bitFlyer restricts an account
Some of these are common to all three operations; others are published by one of them and should not be assumed of the others.
A periodic identity verification or screening
bitFlyer states it may, at its discretion, periodically require identity verification and other screening procedures with respect to an account — and lists this among the reasons an account may be closed or in the process of being closed.
A security freeze
A freeze that bitFlyer applied, or one applied at the account holder's own request. Re-enabling requires contacting support, which verifies identity before unfreezing.
Verification that did not complete
bitFlyer's Japanese operation publishes a distinct state in which the identity verification process has been completed but the account information still displays as incomplete — the account is not frozen, it is unfinished.
A brand-new login session
bitFlyer applies a temporary two-minute restriction on registering an external address or changing two-factor authentication settings after logging in, to prevent unauthorised access.
A document the regional entity does not accept
Accepted identity documents differ by operation. The US entity publishes its own list — a valid US state ID or a US state-issued driver's licence, front and back.
The three operations share a brand and little else procedurally. A rule quoted from the US help centre does not describe the Japanese account, and vice versa; each publishes its own FAQ and its own contact route.
5 things that will make the situation worse
Do not follow the wrong entity's FAQ
bitFlyer's Japanese, European and US operations publish different document lists and different procedures under the same brand.
Do not resubmit identity documents for an incomplete account record
bitFlyer documents that state separately: verification can be complete while the account information is not.
Do not keep retrying a setting change straight after login
The two-minute restriction on registering an external address or changing 2FA is deliberate and short.
Do not ignore a periodic screening request
bitFlyer lists periodic identity verification and screening among the reasons an account may be closed or in the process of being closed.
Do not pay anyone to lift a bitFlyer freeze
The published route is its own support, which verifies your identity first. There is no third party in it and nothing to pay.
bitFlyer may, at its discretion, periodically require identity verification and other screening procedures with respect to your account.
— bitFlyer FAQ, why is my account closed or being closed
What to check first on bitFlyer
Work out which bitFlyer you are on
Japan, Europe and the United States publish separate FAQs, separate document lists and separate contact routes.
Separate a freeze you asked for from one you did not
bitFlyer documents the two separately, and only one of them has a self-service path.
Check the email on the account
bitFlyer states its support reaches out by email where additional documents are needed after a review.
Use the document list your entity publishes
The US operation names a valid US state ID or state-issued driver's licence, front and back. Another entity's list will not do.
What bitFlyer may ask you for
The requirement that matters most here is which entity's list you are working from.
The identity documents your regional entity accepts
bitFlyer's US operation publishes a valid US state ID or a US state-issued driver's licence, front and back.
Identity verification for an unfreeze
bitFlyer states support needs to verify your identity before unfreezing an account after a security freeze.
Whatever a periodic screening asks for
bitFlyer states it may periodically require identity verification and other screening procedures at its discretion.
The account information the record is missing
A separate matter from identity verification, and one bitFlyer documents on its own.
One timeframe is published and it is about documents, not about accounts: review generally takes around 24 hours and may take longer, with bitFlyer contacting the account holder by email if more is needed. It publishes no timeframe for lifting a security freeze.

#Q1 of 8
When was your account blocked?
What we actually do
Identify the entity before the problem
Three regulated operations, three rule sets. Getting this wrong wastes the whole first exchange.

Your account flagged for suspicious activity. Please complete KYC verification.
Establish when and how the freeze started
A self-requested freeze and a security freeze look identical from a login screen and are undone differently.
Assemble the right document list
The accepted documents are published per entity, and a document from the wrong list is simply not accepted.

Prepare for the identity check the unfreeze depends on
Support verifies identity before unfreezing, so the quality of that step is the timeline.
Say when the answer is two minutes
Some bitFlyer restrictions are measured in minutes. We would rather point at the clock than open a case.
The decision is always the exchange's. What we control is that your case reaches it complete, correct and on time.
