Your Bitstamp account
is blocked?
Bitstamp's account problems are usually verification problems. It publishes what its due-diligence tiers require and what documents satisfy them — and, unlike some venues, it does not publish review timeframes, which is worth knowing before you wait on one.

Why Bitstamp restricts an account
Bitstamp documents its customer due diligence in detail and its restriction reasons hardly at all. What follows is drawn from what it does publish.
The account is not verified
Bitstamp states it cannot allow unverified accounts to trade or offer them any other service, because doing so would breach its AML and KYC policies. Unverified holders with a balance have been required to verify, with termination of the account and removal of access rights as the stated consequence of not doing so.
Enhanced due diligence was triggered
Bitstamp describes enhanced due diligence as the tier used for higher-risk situations — it names high-net-worth customers transacting large amounts, and customers in countries known for high levels of corruption or criminal activity. EDD is a deeper check, not a penalty.
Source of funds or source of wealth is in question
Where funds arriving in the account need explaining, Bitstamp asks for documentation of where they came from, and for enhanced due diligence it states a certified copy of the source-of-funds document is required.
The information Bitstamp holds is incomplete
Bitstamp lists the kinds of additional information a deeper check can require: a tax identification number, an ID picture, proof of address, or financial documentation. A gap in any of them stalls the review rather than failing it.
The account is compromised
Bitstamp publishes a separate route for accounts that have been taken over. That is a security case with its own procedure, not a compliance one, and treating it as a compliance case wastes the time that matters most.
Bitstamp does not publish a list of restriction categories or a review timetable. Where a specific reason matters to your case, the request Bitstamp sent you is the only authoritative statement of it.
5 things that will make the situation worse
Do not send an uncertified copy where certification was requested
Bitstamp states enhanced due diligence requires a certified copy of the source-of-funds document. Sending a photograph instead simply repeats the exchange.
Do not let a verification notice period lapse
Bitstamp has stated that failure to verify results in termination of the account and removal of access rights. The date in the notice is the part that cannot be recovered.
Do not treat a compromised account as a compliance case
They have different routes and very different urgency. Bitstamp's support is stated to be available 24/7, which is what a takeover needs.
Do not rely on a support contact you found in a search result
Use the support entry point on bitstamp.net. This is a general rule for every exchange, and it is the reason this page links only to official pages.
Do not assume a timeframe Bitstamp has not published
Unlike some venues, Bitstamp publishes no review window for due-diligence checks. A number from a forum is not a commitment from the exchange.
Enhanced due diligence is used for situations involving higher risk, which could include high-net-worth customers transacting large amounts or those in countries known for having high levels of corruption or criminal activity.

What to check first on Bitstamp
Check the verification state
Unverified accounts cannot trade at all under Bitstamp's AML and KYC policies, which explains a large share of blocked accounts on its own.
Read the request for exactly what it asks
Identity, address, tax number, source of funds and financial documentation are different asks with different documents behind them.
Check whether certification is required
For enhanced due diligence Bitstamp states a certified copy of the source-of-funds document is required — a plain photograph is not the same thing.
Use Bitstamp's own support entry point
Its published support runs 24/7 and through its own ticket route. No third party has a faster channel into it.
What Bitstamp may ask you for
Bitstamp's published due-diligence material names the documents that satisfy each level of check.
Government-issued identification
Bitstamp notes that basic checks may need only government-issued identification — this is the ordinary verification most accounts complete.
Proof of address
Named among the additional information higher-risk situations can require.
A tax identification number
Also named in that list, and frequently the item people do not expect.
Source-of-funds documentation, certified where EDD applies
Bitstamp publishes guidance on which documents clarify the source of wealth behind deposited funds, and states that enhanced due diligence requires a certified copy of the source-of-funds document.
Bitstamp does not publish a review timeframe for these checks. Where you need one, ask through its own support rather than assuming a number you read somewhere else.

When was your account blocked?
What we actually do
Establish which check you are in
Basic verification, enhanced due diligence and a source-of-funds request need different evidence, and Bitstamp's request does not always label itself.
From: compliance@bitstamp.com
Your account flagged for suspicious activity. Please complete KYC verification.
Trace where the funds actually came from
A source-of-wealth answer has to be documented, consistent and complete. Reconstructing it properly is most of the work.
Get the certification requirement right
Whether a copy has to be certified, and by whom, is the single most common reason these submissions come back.

DON'T

Prepare one complete submission
Tax number, proof of address, ID and financial documentation assembled together rather than sent one at a time.
Be clear about what is unknown
Bitstamp publishes no review timeframe, and we will not invent one to make a case sound more predictable than it is.
The decision is always the exchange's. What we control is that your case reaches it complete, correct and on time.
