Kraken Source of Funds Verification, Step by Step

Kraken source of funds verification asks you to show where the money for a specific transaction came from, and it is separate from source of wealth, which shows how your assets were built over time. This guide summarises what Kraken's help pages state and adds practical preparation tips: how to read the request, which documents can fit each question, the formatting rules Kraken states, and how to send a consistent answer. The decision on the review is Kraken's.

If Kraken has asked for source-of-funds documents, the task is to give it a clear, documented answer to one question. The facts attributed to Kraken below come from its published help pages as read in September 2026; the practical suggestions are marked as ours and are not Kraken requirements. Wording, document lists and time limits can change, and requirements can differ between clients, so treat the request in your own account as the authority.
Kraken source of funds verification: what is being asked?
Kraken's help centre covers its source-of-wealth and source-of-funds document requests. Kraken's help page says such a request "does not mean you have done anything wrong", and that it may depend on the country you live in or on your current situation.
What is the difference between source of funds and source of wealth?
The two terms are easy to confuse, and answering the wrong one can lead to a second round of questions.
- Source of funds (SOF) verifies where the money for a specific transaction came from. One deposit, one origin.
- Source of wealth (SOW) shows how you built your wealth over time: through income, savings, investments, property and similar.
If the request names a particular deposit or amount, it is a source-of-funds question, and a document that explains a whole career or an inheritance from years ago may not answer it, because it shows how wealth was built rather than where this specific money came from. If it asks about your overall financial background, it is a source-of-wealth question, and a single bank statement is too narrow.
Step 1: how do you read the request?
Write down, in one sentence each: which deposit or transaction is being asked about, whether the request says source of funds or source of wealth, and what deadline, if any, is stated. If something is unclear, you can ask Kraken support yourself to clarify the reason for the request and the list of documents. That is useful. Detailed explanations sent before you know what is being asked are better avoided, because contradictions in answers already sent can seriously complicate a case.
Step 2: which documents answer it?
Kraken's article on proof of source of funds is the place to read what Kraken says about it. In general terms, this kind of request is about the origin of the money for a specific transaction. The right document depends on where your money actually came from, and the request in your account is the authority on what Kraken wants to see.
Two suggestions of ours, not Kraken's: choose the document that answers this request rather than the most impressive one, and make sure its amounts and dates match the deposit in question. Our blog also has a general guide to proving the source of funds.
Step 3: what are the formatting rules?
Kraken's help page on source-of-wealth and source-of-funds documents states formal requirements. Check every file against them before you upload, and check the current requirements on the page itself:
- Date: documents must be dated within 24 months, although the page notes that exceptions apply.
- Address: the address on the document must match the one in your Kraken profile, and PO box addresses are not accepted.
Documents that do not meet the stated requirements, such as an out-of-date document or a PO box address, may not be accepted. If the address on your bank statement no longer matches your profile, deal with that first.
Step 4: what if the funds are already on Kraken?
Kraken's help page says that if the funds are already in your Kraken account, you should also provide a document showing that they were transferred in, such as a bank statement or a crypto wallet transaction. Our suggestion: make sure the amounts in your explanation match the amounts on the chain or the statement.
Step 5: how do you send one consistent answer?
- Answer the question that was asked. Name the deposit and give the origin in a few sentences.
- Attach the documents in the order the explanation mentions them, with clear file names.
- Check that dates, amounts and names agree between the message and every file.
- Send it once through Kraken's official channel. Keep the ticket number and a copy of everything.
- If Kraken asks a follow-up, answer that follow-up only.
Which pitfalls slow a source of funds review?
- Answering a source-of-wealth question with a single statement, or the other way round.
- Documents that are out of date, unreadable or in a format Kraken does not accept.
- A statement whose address does not match the profile.
- Explanations that differ from one message to the next.
- Submitting documents that are not genuine.
- Paying anyone who promises to "clear" the review or a fixed result.
How can Unblock.Exchange help, and what can it not do?
Unblock.Exchange is an independent compliance advisory and case-preparation service, not affiliated with Kraken or any other exchange. We do not guarantee unblocking and we do not promise a date.
The team studies your transactions, documents and correspondence, helps you structure the information and helps prepare answers to the exchange's requests. You send those answers through the official channel from your own account, and you stay in control of the process. We do not ask for access to your exchange account. See also our Kraken page and the exchange directory.
Based on our past cases, the work has taken 5–90 days depending on complexity, and some well-prepared cases have taken 7–12 days. These are examples from our practice, not a promise: complex cases can take longer.
We work under a contract, through a company registered in Dubai. The first consultation is free, and before paid work starts we agree the terms. Payment usually consists of a retainer before work begins, which is not refundable, and a success fee charged only after you have withdrawn the funds from your exchange account; if the account is not unblocked, there is no success fee.
Write to us on Telegram @UnblockExchange or via the bot @UnblockExchange_bot, or email support@unblock.exchange. More answers are on the FAQ page. We usually reply quickly; the exact timing depends on the time of day.
